Mason Jar Wedding Centerpiece DIY – Part 2

Last week I started a post on DIY mason jar wedding centerpieces and I’m here now to bring you Part 2! I mentioned before about collecting your supplies and making a plan, but then its a waiting game until the wedding weekend.

Then all you have to do is get your flowers and assemble! Schedule some time before the wedding and get some helpers! We assembled all our centerpieces and ceremony aisle decor on the Friday afternoon before the rehearsal. And since everyone was coming in for the rehearsal, my bridesmaids and friends and family were all there to help!

Have a flower assembly party! All you need is…

..water..

..bleach.. (to keep the water clean and flowers fresh)

..scissors..

..newspaper..

..vases and flowers!..

As you can see, we laid out all the mason jars and flowers to get an idea of what we had. We did a mock set up of each of the designs. We had 3 versions, the pint size jars for the aisle decor at the ceremony (which we had hanging on shepherds hooks), and the half-gallon jars and quart sizes in pairs for the reception centerpieces.

Then it was a mass assembly line! In the end, you might have left overs, or some will look slightly different, but you can’t really go wrong with fresh flowers and mason jars! Then we were able to leave the pre-assembled jars at the location over night, ready for set up the next day! By the way, did I mention who we had as day of coordinators?? Check out Megan Elise Events and Fox and Bear ! They were both amazing and we couldn’t have done it with out them!

Wedding week – DIY wedding craft parties and ideas!

One of my favorite parts of planning our wedding was how much our family pulled together to help!  We had many weekends of going to antique markets and craft days where we made the DIY parts of the wedding decor! You can really do a lot of things on your own, and in the end it is so gratifying to know that you did it!!

I’ve posted about the invitation before HERE, but we did make our own invitations using a large custom made stamp.  Here is my husband who stamped every single invitation and RSVP card!

We also cut our own burlap runners.  Here is how they started. And here is how they ended!A more detailed post about the table runners can be found HERE.
One of my favorite decor pieces was the burlap banners we made.
I love you brother :) so glad you were having so much fun helping me! Don’t hate me for posting this photo!

We also wanted to use chalkboards for signage, but we found that it was much cheaper to just use old frames and paint them whatever color you prefer, and then use chalkboard paint to make the inside.

The last helpful thing we did – that I highly recommend – is a mock set up of our centepieces and extra tables (dessert table, drink table, gift table, guestbook table etc.) It helped to get a good idea of what we had and what we still needed.  That also made it a lot easier to sort things by table and organize and store it for easy set up!  Here are some of our mock table set ups…

Wedding week – Vintage Prop Shopping

I cant believe it’s almost been a year since Matt and I were married. Time flies when your having fun I guess! I thought since we will be celebrating our one year anniversary this week, I’d feature some wedding posts about the DIY projects we haven’t featured yet from our wedding.

First up: PROP SHOPPING. I had a ton of fun scouring antique markets, flea markets and garage sales for perfect wedding decor with friends and family.  We were mainly looking for crates, mason jars, large frames, a mailbox, chalk boards and little knick knacks that gave a rustic, homey feel.

This was a corner of my bedroom before the wedding – ha!
Here are some photos of our finds and how we used them…
We used slotted coke crates for displaying our cupcakes and apple crates as stands to add height for our dessert and drink table displays. To order the banner shown click HERE!

Chalkboards were great ways to direct guests, give them options, and welcome them!

Our guestbook table was a combo of coke crates, mason jars, chalkboards, a type writer and even an old mailbox!

We also looked for old signs and large frames to use for our photo booth! It was so fun to see our guests use the open frames to take fun pictures!
My dad painted this sign for me.  I love the photo above.

And of course, we collected mason jars for our centerpieces.  All shapes and sizes to use as vases and candleholders.
And now we have a ton of rustic antique decor for our home! We use the mason jars, coke crates, frames, and chalkboards to decorate!

Next up – behind the scenes wedding craft parties!! Talk to you soon!

Creative Guestbook ideas – got mail?

Instead of a traditional Guestbook where your guests sign their name, why not make the Guestbook signing into an activity for your guests and have them actually write notes to the bride and groom? It can help to pass time between ceremony and reception and provides a really fun and special activity for the bride and groom to look back and remember their wedding day.

There are many ways to do this, see some ideas that inspired me below. I liked the idea of a “wishing wall” or a time capsule to open for years later in your marriage.

Sticking with the idea to have something to open after the wedding, we decided to use an old mailbox and have our guests write little love letters to the bride and groom. I found a simple old white mailbox at an antique market and used that for the guests to leave us a note.Once you decide what you want to use to catch all the notes, you can then decide what kind of cards and envelopes you want to use. We used Kraft paper envelopes and cards to fit our theme. It becomes fun then to think of your “Guestbook” table as part of the decor for your wedding and you can be really creative! We used an old coke crate with 2 sides where we held notecards and envelopes and then mason jars to hold the pens.

The important thing to make sure you provide instructions so your guests know what to do. We used a chalkboard for this, which also added to the decor. (photo credit to Bethany Cissel Photography!)

You can have so much fun with it! We even used an old typewriter (thanks Gail!) to add to the vintage look of the table. What could also be fun is actually using the type writer to have the guests “sign in”.

Use every opportunity in your wedding to do something creative and unique, and don’t feel stuck in what things are “should” be like. There are so many fun ideas out there! Use your wedding decor and activities to show your personality as a couple.  It will make your entire day feel more comfortable and personal for you and your guests.

What’s in a name?

You may wonder where the name, loveinamasonjar came.  Even though mason jars are pretty trendy lately and I have been collecting them for a long time and use them for everything (other post on that here), the idea really came from the way my husband proposed to me back in July.

He knew that I loved mason jars, particularly the really old ones that you find at antique markets or estate sales. I collect them wherever I go, so naturally, him giving me a present of a mason jar filled with rose petals on a date seemed totally appropriate, and not something out of the ordinary.

really pretty, right?

Little did I know what was inside…

We had spent the whole day just being together, hiking, eating lunch, getting coffee, even visiting an awesome antique farm.

Isn't this place cool!

So many fun things to look at!

So when we got back to our spot at the lake in the grass, I didn’t think anything of it when he handed me a cardboard box with a pretty blue mason jar inside. I just admired it and said “Thank you!” He had to say to me, “Why don’t you open it up?”

So I did… and then I saw something sparkle in the midst of all the rose petals and I shrieked, “Are you serious!!?” See, we had been dating for a looong time so I never thought this day would come. :) But it did… and inside tied to a red ribbon was a beautiful engagement ring that he picked out for me.

Love in a mason jar…

One jar … so many uses …

I don’t know where the love of mason jars started for me, but I’ve always been drawn to old, vintage things that remind me of the country and kindof a farmhouse style.  There’s something authentic about them.  Simple, useful, multipurpose.  So they’ve always been something I’ve picked up at antique markets and anywhere I’m out searching for new vintage finds and I’ve started quite a collection.  But more recently I’ve discovered they are not only good for canning and preserving, but a million other things that can add so much character to a home, wedding, or event.  I use them for everything in my home, and they were a key decorative factor to my recent wedding.  See below some awesome ideas for mason jars I’ve recently used.

And more posts on this to come, as I’ve used mason jars for many other things for favors, gifts, holiday decorations, etc. so stay tuned! :)

A great way to organize craft supplies, and the medium size fits in an old slotted crate for storage!

In the bathroom, the blue jars compliment the white contents and are a great alternative to the usual hurricane vases.

A great way to store makeup brushes!

In my kitchen I am growing an herb garden in mason jars.
