Mason Jar Wedding Centerpiece DIY – Part 2

Last week I started a post on DIY mason jar wedding centerpieces and I’m here now to bring you Part 2! I mentioned before about collecting your supplies and making a plan, but then its a waiting game until the wedding weekend.

Then all you have to do is get your flowers and assemble! Schedule some time before the wedding and get some helpers! We assembled all our centerpieces and ceremony aisle decor on the Friday afternoon before the rehearsal. And since everyone was coming in for the rehearsal, my bridesmaids and friends and family were all there to help!

Have a flower assembly party! All you need is…

..water..

..bleach.. (to keep the water clean and flowers fresh)

..scissors..

..newspaper..

..vases and flowers!..

As you can see, we laid out all the mason jars and flowers to get an idea of what we had. We did a mock set up of each of the designs. We had 3 versions, the pint size jars for the aisle decor at the ceremony (which we had hanging on shepherds hooks), and the half-gallon jars and quart sizes in pairs for the reception centerpieces.

Then it was a mass assembly line! In the end, you might have left overs, or some will look slightly different, but you can’t really go wrong with fresh flowers and mason jars! Then we were able to leave the pre-assembled jars at the location over night, ready for set up the next day! By the way, did I mention who we had as day of coordinators?? Check out Megan Elise Events and Fox and Bear ! They were both amazing and we couldn’t have done it with out them!

Here is what we ended up with – photos courtesy of my wonderful photographer – Bethany Cissel

Mason Jar Wedding Centerpiece DIY – Part 1

It’s beginning to feel like spring in the air and that means wedding season is coming! We are attending 2 weddings this month, and I’m excited! I just love what a wedding means, and it makes me reminisce about our wedding! In that spirit, I thought I’d share a little DIY post on making your own wedding centerpieces!

I’ve mentioned before about doing your own bridal party bouquets – see that post HERE – but we also did all the flowers for our centerpieces and flowers for the ceremony! It is actually pretty easy (and budget friendly!) so long as you have wonderful bridesmaids and friends to help! And it just takes a little planning.

First thing to do is – think about your tables.  Do you have long picnic style table, or rounds? How many? This will help you to determine how many set of centerpieces you will need.

Then decide what kind of centerpiece you want. Vases, flowers, candles, etc. And you do want anything on them, like burlap or lace, or ribbon? Sometimes the number of sets you will need will also help determine what your centerpieces will look like.

Once you have determined these things, you can start collecting your supplies!

We had long picnic style tables (4 rows that were 40 feet long!) I think we had five 8 foot tables in a row. That meant I needed 20 sets of centerpieces for the guests. But don’t forget about the head table! We decided to use the bouquets as the flowers for that and we put them in crates.

Don’t know what I was excited about, but it looks fun!

ANYWAY – 20 sets of centerpieces. We decided to do mason jars (half-gallon and quart sizes) with flowers and some with candles. You might also want to set up a few mock tables before to see what they look like and make sure you know how much you will need.

Once you have collected all your vases (or in our case mason jars), you just have to think about how many flowers you want to go in each and what types. I had no preference on flowers, and we didn’t really have wedding “colors” I just knew I liked natural colors, and more natural types of flowers, as opposed to roses. Sadly, I don’t remember the names of the flowers we ended up getting, but this is what they looked like!

To figure out how many flowers you want in each vase, I’d recommend making a sample arrangement.  If you can’t get the same flowers as you want in the wedding, just get some that are similar in size so you can get a feel for how much you need.

You’ll also need to think about WHERE you want to get the flowers, WHEN you want to get them, and WHO will get them. For us, we had the LA Flower Mart nearby, we picked them up on Thursday morning (for a Saturday wedding), and I went with my mom, mother-in-law, and a friend who knows the flower mart. It worked out perfect, and the flowers held up great in buckets in the garage for a few days.

So once you know what you want and have all your supplies, you just have to wait until the wedding to get the flowers and put them together!

Stay tuned for a post on that next!! Happy Weekend!

DIY Handmade Valentine’s Day gifts

jar of love - loveinamasonjar.com
Looking for some hand-made gift ideas for Valentine’s Day? I like the idea of Valentine’s day, but I don’t love the commercialism of it all, and the pressure I feel it puts on people. But I still like to celebrate those I love, so I enjoy making hand-made things! Here are some home-made gift ideas:

Jar of Love

All you need is {love}

..mason jar with ring..

…scrap of fabric..

..twine..

..letter stamps and ink..

..scraps of paper..

This idea here is to cut scraps of paper (I used scraps of solid color wrapping paper) into long strips, and write things you love about that person on them!

Then roll them up and place them in the jar! I cup some scrap fabric into a square and stamped the word “LOVE” on to it for the lid. Then just  screw the silver ring on and add some twine or ribbon if you want! That’s it! A collection of thoughts and things you love about someone in a little jar! A Jar of Love!

A second idea for a hand-made gift, particularly for a newlywed couple, is to display a “first dance” photo from your wedding in a frame with the lyrics from the song hand written around it.

First Dance Frame with Lyrics

All you need is:

..frame..

..first dance photo..

..song lyrics..

..sharpie..

..photo mat frame..

It’s so easy it doesn’t even need any instructions. Voila!

Wedding week – DIY wedding craft parties and ideas!

One of my favorite parts of planning our wedding was how much our family pulled together to help!  We had many weekends of going to antique markets and craft days where we made the DIY parts of the wedding decor! You can really do a lot of things on your own, and in the end it is so gratifying to know that you did it!!

I’ve posted about the invitation before HERE, but we did make our own invitations using a large custom made stamp.  Here is my husband who stamped every single invitation and RSVP card!

We also cut our own burlap runners.  Here is how they started. And here is how they ended!A more detailed post about the table runners can be found HERE.
One of my favorite decor pieces was the burlap banners we made.
I love you brother :) so glad you were having so much fun helping me! Don’t hate me for posting this photo!

We also wanted to use chalkboards for signage, but we found that it was much cheaper to just use old frames and paint them whatever color you prefer, and then use chalkboard paint to make the inside.

The last helpful thing we did – that I highly recommend – is a mock set up of our centepieces and extra tables (dessert table, drink table, gift table, guestbook table etc.) It helped to get a good idea of what we had and what we still needed.  That also made it a lot easier to sort things by table and organize and store it for easy set up!  Here are some of our mock table set ups…

Wedding week – Vintage Prop Shopping

I cant believe it’s almost been a year since Matt and I were married. Time flies when your having fun I guess! I thought since we will be celebrating our one year anniversary this week, I’d feature some wedding posts about the DIY projects we haven’t featured yet from our wedding.

First up: PROP SHOPPING. I had a ton of fun scouring antique markets, flea markets and garage sales for perfect wedding decor with friends and family.  We were mainly looking for crates, mason jars, large frames, a mailbox, chalk boards and little knick knacks that gave a rustic, homey feel.

This was a corner of my bedroom before the wedding – ha!
Here are some photos of our finds and how we used them…
We used slotted coke crates for displaying our cupcakes and apple crates as stands to add height for our dessert and drink table displays. To order the banner shown click HERE!

Chalkboards were great ways to direct guests, give them options, and welcome them!

Our guestbook table was a combo of coke crates, mason jars, chalkboards, a type writer and even an old mailbox!

We also looked for old signs and large frames to use for our photo booth! It was so fun to see our guests use the open frames to take fun pictures!
My dad painted this sign for me.  I love the photo above.

And of course, we collected mason jars for our centerpieces.  All shapes and sizes to use as vases and candleholders.
And now we have a ton of rustic antique decor for our home! We use the mason jars, coke crates, frames, and chalkboards to decorate!

Next up – behind the scenes wedding craft parties!! Talk to you soon!

Fall Wedding Trend – Burlap and Lace

At our wedding we used 40 foot long tables for our guests at the reception, instead of the traditional round tables. It made it feel more like a large family picnic which is exactly what we were going for. Because of the long tables, we decided to use classic white linens with long burlap table runners. And although we got married almost a year ago it’s fun to see that the burlap trend has continued for rustic weddings, especially for those in the fall. Since it is FINALLY starting to cool down and feel like fall here I thought we could talk BURLAP!! Burlap table runners, burlap wrapped bouquets, burlap and lace mason jars, and burlap and lace placemat centerpieces!

First things first, burlap table runners!  To make really long runners (like these pictured) you can purchase whole rolls of burlap from places like Joann’s fabric for a decent price (and don’t forget they have coupons online!). They will cut it to whatever length you want but it will be really wide, and so we found that cutting it into thirds makes for perfect width for table runners (about 15 inches wide). Your table lengths will determine what length you’d like them to cut the fabric.  If they are really long (like ours) it will be quite a task to cut it into thirds, but if you have a long table, you can lay it out in sections and use a tape measurer and chalk to mark the section. Make sure you have a good pair of scissors to cut the fabric since burlap can be kinda rough.  The good thing is, burlap is forgiving since it is already frayed, so if you are a little off, no one will notice!!

Next burlap wedding idea…burlap wrapped bouquets!

Burlap can be a great detail to use to wrap your bouquets with!  If they are first wrapped with floral wire, then it’s easy to wrap any material around!  You can either cut from burlap that you already have to the width of the stems, or you could also find burlap rolls (like these HERE) that is a great width for bouquets.  To secure the material around the stems, you can use twine and wrap it several times (we wrapped it pretty wide) and then tie at the end!

Burlap can also be great as decor on mason jars for centerpieces!  We didn’t use these at our wedding, but if we had more time I bet we would have!  I actually created these for my ETSY shop because I thought they would make great vases or candle holders!  You can use any combination of lace, burlap, and twine to make beautiful creations!  Just use glue! If you want to order these, Click Here!

Another option for your tables that provides a more romantic, shabby chic feel, are burlap and lace runners, or place mats!  You can always add lace to the ends of the burlap runners you cut, or cut smaller pieces into place mat size (mine are 12 inches square with 2 inch lace on either side).  The place mats can be used to go under centerpieces for round tables!

Just add a little lace trim to the ends of the burlap and you’re done!

If you’d like to order the burlap and lace runners or place mats that are pictured above you can find them HERE!

Our Fall Fairytale Wedding – featured on loveandlavender.com

I’m so excited to share that our wedding has been featured on the blog loveandlavender.com !! I suppose it’s about time to share some photos of our wedding (since it was last November!), so here you are!  It’s perfect timing, because I have been getting the itch for fall to come and this reminds me of what we have to look forward to.  This blog has super cute ideas and features lots of other wonderful, beautiful weddings.  Thanks Love and Lavender!! Engagement Photo Ideas – chalkboards, old trucks, and postcards

I’ve been reminiscing about our engagement photos this week, probably because we are coming up on our 1 year anniversary of being engaged.  Nonetheless, I was looking at photos and wanted to share.

Thanks to Bethany Cissel - our amazing photographer – we ended up with so many options, it was hard to choose what to do!

There are so many amazing engagement photo ideas I’ve seen – especially on pinterest – from chalkboards, to banner props, to photo booth strips, and even just beautiful scenery and backdrops, there are so many fun options! But we knew we wanted to send a postcard announcement, so we started with that.

Originally we thought about using a chalkboard with the wedding info…

You’ll notice the cowboy boots in the photos too because we knew we wanted to wear boots at the wedding!!

We also knew we wanted to use the infamous red truck in the wedding, so we took some photos with that too as a possibility.

But it turned out that we loved all the lifestyle photos and great moments that Bethany captured AND we found some super cute templates for postcards on photo sharing sites (we used wedding paper divas), so we didn’t even use what we thought we would! And we couldn’t decide which photos to use (which is why you will see that we had 4 different versions we sent out) :) See the final product(s) below!!

DIY Mason Jar Bridal Shower gift

I know I’ve mentioned that I had a cute bridal shower favor idea using mason jars, so I thought I’d share today!  This actually came from one of my previous bosses (and friend!).  She was in charge of the favors at my work bridal shower and I thought they  were so great, I wanted to share!

Since our wedding was outdoors, rustic and most of the decor included mason jars, burlap, and kraft paper, this favor was the perfect idea!  AND it included my favorite dessert, chocolate chip cookies…

So what was the favor, you ask? Homemade chocolate chip cookies in a mason jar!

How cute is this?

Mason jars, Burlap, and Lace – we’re busy creating at loveinamasonjar etsy shop!

We’ve been busy at the loveinamasonjar etsy shop! I’ve started to make more burlap banners in white paint for the spring and summer and have tried new sayings for not only weddings, but engagement photos, baby pictures, and holidays as well!  I’ve also enjoyed getting custom requests for banners.  I like people’s ideas of how to use the banners and it’s especially fun when I get to see pictures of how they use them!

I’ve also been experimenting with mason jars and ways to decorate them with lace , burlap and twine. It’s been my new favorite thing. They make for great candle holders because the light shines through the lace beautifully!

It has been fun to create and try things out! You never know what you might come up with!

Check out what we’ve been up to!
